Martin Plettl

Martin Plettl was born on 29 September 1881 in the Lower Bavarian town of Garham near Vilshofen. He was a qualified ladies’ tailor and a member of the SPD. In 1933 he was chairman of the German Federation of Garment Workers. When SA men occupied the seat of the trade union in May 1933, Martin Plettl was arrested and brought to the SA Prison in General-Pape-Strasse. From here he came to the police prison at Alexanderplatz and finally to the prison in Berlin-Spandau. After his release he was able to flee in October 1933 by way of the Netherlands to the USA. There he founded the German Liberty Association. Martin Plettl died in Florida on 10 September 1963.
